Speaker:

Arik Abel

The Art of Improv for Better Networking

Arik Abel is the Director of Digital Services for Raleigh-based PR and Advertising firm French | West | Vaughan. But marketing wasn't always the career he saw ahead of him. From 2000-2007, Arik worked in the music industry - as an artist manager, record producer and sound engineer.

Tired of non-stop travelling and paying rent on an empty Brooklyn loft he only saw for a quarter of the year, Arik left the music industry in the summer of 2007 in pursuit of the unknown. Unemployed for the first time, and restless with staying in one place, he signed up for his very first improv class at the legendary Upright Citizen's Brigade (UCB) Theatre (launchpad for the careers of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari and Bobby Moynihan to name a few).

Since completing studies at UCB in 2008, Arik has weathered two cross-country relocations - from New York to Seattle and Seattle to Raleigh - left behind two steady jobs, bounced between countless other contract positions and consulting gigs during the worst economy ever, started an online cooking show, created and taught classes on online video to hundreds of people, and stood on stage in front of thousands - whether for improv or public speaking. And he credits his ability to stay positive, create opportunities and network with the best of them, all to a few simple concepts he's learned in improv classes along the way.

Presentation Overview

There's truth to the saying "all the world's a stage." Especially when it comes to the networking scene. You're surrounded by people you don't know and expected to performing amazing feats - like making a good impression, explaining the value of what you do, or starting new relationships with people you may or may not like. And all this in unfamiliar environments with lots of unknowns. Networking is a lot like improv in that way. Improvisers find themselves on stage with strangers, in front of crowds of strangers, with the expectation of making people hang on your every word and action. The fundamentals of the art of improv can have a profound impact on the way you communicate and make connections - whether you're seeking your next job opportunity, your next big sale or just better relationships with your co-workers.

Arik Abel has studied improv at top theatres in New York, Seattle and most recently Chapel Hill, and will share the simple concepts he's learned along the way, and how you can put them into practice immediately.
